Eye Exam

Eye Exam, Keene, NH

At New England Eyeworks in Keene, New Hampshire, our eye doctors examine adults of all ages and provide personalized care in a warm and friendly environment.

Regular eye exams with an optometrist are a key component of health care. Some eye diseases have little to no symptoms in the early stages, and early detection and treatment of these conditions are essential to maintaining good vision.

What do eye exams include?

During your eye exam, our optometrist will perform different tests to check your eye health and vision. Your eye exam may include the following:

  • A comprehensive vision exam
  • Education on how to maintain healthy vision
  • Screening for eye diseases
  • Refractive tests to determine if prescription lenses are needed
  • Developing a treatment plan to treat eye diseases or conditions
  • Determining if specialized care is needed

How long does an eye exam take?

Getting an eye exam typically takes around 30–45 minutes. Before the exam, the eye doctor or another member of our team will ask about your medical and vision care history, as well as any concerns you may have regarding your vision.

After the exam, the eye doctor will explain the test results and offer recommendations for follow-up care or treatment if needed. These options may include prescription glasses or contact lenses, eye drops or prescription medications, in-office procedures, or referrals to specialists if needed.

Why are eye exams important?

There’s more to eye exams than just checking your vision. Our eye doctors use diagnostic technology to spot early signs of eye diseases and other health conditions that could affect your vision and overall health. Many eye diseases, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, do not have any symptoms in their early stages. Eye exams help us detect these conditions before they worsen and cause permanent vision loss.

Eye exams can also reveal signs of other health conditions, like diabetes, high blood pressure, and even certain types of cancers.

How often should you get an eye exam?

How often you need an eye exam will depend on factors like your age, overall health, and risk factors for eye diseases and other conditions. For most adults, we recommend getting an eye exam every year. If you have a family history of eye diseases, are over 60, or have health conditions like diabetes or hypertension, you may need to see an eye doctor more often.
